Harry Gilson: I am recording myself writing

I am recording myself writing. I've written a lot before but never recorded myself. The camera is quite far away. My goal is to get 5000-10000 words. It doesn't even have to be good. The important thing is to get a stream of conciousness going and worry about the rest later. Whatever comes to mind I write. I can't sit here all day anyway, I have a job to go to. But before that I need to write a story. The structure is three scenes. I'm going to get the book I made yesterday for reference. Also refilled my coffee mug with milk and put another pot on. Yesterday I began to make a story called bigger or better. But I bit off more than I could chew. Lesson learned: keep your stories short and sweet. You have a full-time job so anything more than six pages is unrealistic. The current set up is three sheets of A4 paper, folded in half to make the six page story somewhat presentable. Though I will say I'm using cheap materials at the moment. I have expensive ones but I get too tense when I use them. So I've reverted back to plain old cartridge paper. Though I am tempted to at least get some slightly thicker cartridge paper just so that the ink doesn't bleed through. Today's story is going to be a guide for me to use to write further stories. Very meta I know but it makes sense to keep it simple, at least for now. I need a beginning middle and end.

Beginning: Write until you think of a beginning, middle, and end. It doesn't have to be anything groundbreaking, but the structure must be clear in it's entirity. Middle: Draw the story with an ink pen and colour it with pencils. Then record yourself reading the story. End: Scan the drawings and get them into video editing software, along with the voiceover (and any sound effects you might need). Finally, publish the story onto the internet.

There it is, clear, definitely not groundbreaking by any means. However, it's certainly an original - no arguing with that. Time to go through the process. I honestly thought that would take longer to come up with a story. I think it was picasso that once said something like inspiration exists, but it has to find you at work. This holds true here. Again, not the most inspiring story, but not the least either. I might add to this more as I go. My next improvement to the process will be printing the text, my handwriting isn't very readable, and I have a hand-made font I'd like to get more use out of. I'm not sure how much printers are around here, and I don't think I'll get one until I at least have some interest online. I have one back in my office, but it's hardly worth booking a flight for. I suppose I'll see what comes first, money or my temporary return to the motherland. The internet is down here at the moment, probably something related to the power outage earlier. It happens more frequently than I'm used to. To be expected on a small island. I'm literally just writing for footage at this point. Let's call it there for now.

Perhaps 3 stages wont be enough. I'm just thinking in terms of finished prodcut i.e. the short video. Three stages will be under 15 seconds. I want at least 30 I think. Then the long form content can be as much as I want to talk. I'm not sure how well it will go, will need to get myself into the talking mood I suppose. Keep it casual just stream of conciousness stuff. I'm not sure if I mentioned, but I'm thinking of timelapsing the process and then voicing it over. That will serve as my long video output. Still a finished product in itself. But part of a greater whole. Which are made up of the book, the movie, and the process video. So if I'm to add another sheet, that means a minimum of 2 extra drawing scenes. Which makes a total of 5 drawing scenes and 5 text scenes. Need to look into the three/five-act-structure.
